MTV's "The Inbetweeners" Reviewed

Sometimes, Americans try and replicate things.  All of the time, their version is worse and pitiful.  A prime example of this is the US version of Skins.  Because of the laws here, the show can't be as a) risque b) realistic and c) awesome.

MTV just premiered their version of The Inbetweeners.  I love the UK version- the characters are perfect, they all are wonderfully matched and the show's chemistry is what makes it one of the funniest shows ever.  Going into watching the US version, I wanted to view it as something entirely unrelated to the other version.

Will McKenzie was cast flawlessly.  Played by actor Joey Pollari, he really captures the spirit of private school-attending, sweatervest-wearing Will.  I'm really glad that they totally nailed this character.  Also, Neil is portrayed by Mark L Young, which was yet another fabulous match.  The only one that didn't fit was Jay.  The actor Zack Pearlman most certainly didn't strike me, or anyone else, as the wannabe sex god of the group.

The show itself?  Freaking. Hilarious.  The scripting is similar to that of the original, and the jist of it is all the same.  I actually legitimately laughed out loud a couple times, which I typically don't do at MTV "comedies".  This is probably only because I've seen it before, so I understand the jokes and the British sense of humour.  Unfortunately, this more than likely won't translate over to the American audience unless someone spells it out for 'em.  Just because America ran out of original ideas doesn't mean that they have to reuse jokes other shows have found successful.  There's no way that the things I laughed at during the pilot episode were also laughed at by a 12 year old teenage girl who only knows that England exists because of One Direction.

All in all, I'm most certainly going to continue watching this show diligently and enjoying it, because UK or not, the show's damn good.  MTV didn't screw it up this time.
