In 1965, Herb Alpert (and the Tijuana brass band) released the instrumental, all so typical smooth and sweet Whipped Cream And Other delights around two years into his career. The sound was mainstream smooth jazz, the sorta stuff that seemed to define the Playboy Philosophy. All blowing into trumpets with pretty Bunnies on your knee.To Alpert's credit, it wasn't all bad and, with the 1968 hit "This Guy's In Love With You", it was ALL GOOD when he kept "Jumping Jack Flash" off the # 1 slot. The sort of trivial tidbit that makes me wonder if I don't overestimate a time when the same choice is "Call Me Maybe" keeping "Boyfriend" off the top slot….
But I digress. the cover, as you will note, is a naked woman with whipped cream all over her. Not so shocking (but awful sticky) right? Not in 1965… Her name is Dolores Erickson, she is 76 years old now, and she was interviewed in the the Seattle Times by Eric Lacitis, who found this quote from the New Yorker : "it fogged the minds of many young men, as they gazed at the… personalized come-hitherhood to the woman staring back … the inner portion of a bare breast protrudes from the foam. She is licking cream from the index finger of her right hand… in the virtually pornless atmosphere of the suburban mid-sixties it was … the pinnacle of allure". No doubt.
Delores said this to the "10001 Songs" blog: "I had a bikini underneath and at one point it did slip all the way down but I wasn't aware of it".
And the album stayed on the charts for 141 weeks.
Personally, I think she looks quite lovely today.
