Listen Up: 6-13-12

1. Forrest Gump – Frank Ocean – The penultimate song off the album (just before "The End"), is a beautiful ballad much less of meter and away from the expected melody line than the rest of the songs. A barely veiled love song that might have raised some eyebrows if Ocean hadn't already outed himself: "you are my fine boy, running on my mind boy"? Grade: A

2. Impregnable Question – Dirty Projectors – From un to requited love. Dave's clearest, most concise and most songwriterly song – Grade: A

3. Knee 1 – Phillip Glass – from his masterpiece and eight minutes of number counting – Grade: B+

4. How To Be  A Heartbreaker – Marina And The Diamond – She is not a robot, she just writes like one. Grade: B-

5. Dance Dance Dance – Chic- Yowzer, folks – Grade: A+

6. Mama Said – The Shirelles – So good, Lennon stole it for "Nobody Ever told me" – Grade: A+

7. Only In My Darkness – Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti – Like the Byrds if the Byrds were indie, and hadn't mastered melody Grade: B

8. Brilliant Mistake – Elvis Costello – This is from the only  album T-Bone Burnette's production paid off for C. It was a fine idea at the time, but now…?  – Grade: A

9.Sorry – Friends – That post I wrote about Samantha Urbani getting married? 700 hits and counting – Grade: A
