A Play List For February 2009 by Iman Lababedi

It was twelve months ago and Rock NYC was just a twinkling of an inkling but I was still listening obessively to music…

Lua – Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch – From the Dark Was the Night alt charity album, Conor makes a pretty song just so much lovelier with only acoustic and Gillian sings better than Conor does.

Crack a Bottle – Eminem, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent – This promised so well for Relapse and I thought he paid it off. Pure Eminem.

Sooundtrack 2 My Life – Kid Cudi – “I got 99 problems and they’re all bitches…” Emo-hop or at least as close as we’ll ever get to it.

The Mountain – Heartless Bastards – All fuzzy guitars and tough chick singer at half pace. Kinda nineties and powerful as hell.

What Love Can Do – Bruce Springsteen – Generic Bruce and not good generic Bruce.

My Love – The Bird And The Bee- All handclaps and keybs from this LA duo whose next album is a tribute to Hall and Oates. She and Him should check these guys out and learn a trick or two.

Get On Your Boots – U2 – I claim not to have liked a U2 song in a decade but it’s not true. I love this steaming hot rocker “I don’t wanna talk about war between nations,” Bono claims “Not right now…”

Oh No – Andrew Bird – Pretty enough and the whistling intro is a hoot but this guy is a touch too refined for my gutter tastes.

Dinner At Eight – Rufus Wainwright – Dysfunctional family fun with your food.

Wisconsin – Bon Iver – I loved For Emma, Forever Ago when it was first released but it hasn’t stood the test of time.

Everything’s Just wonderful – Lilly Allen – When Allen is on her game, not consistently on her sohomore effort, she is in a league all her own. “Oh, Jesus Christ Almighty, am I feeling alright? No not slightly”. Written to be read and sung.
