the legendary for science
Fenway Lights – For Science – They say Dusthead is an influence, I’ve got news: these guys leave everybody in their dust. The best first couplet ever (“I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than spend the night hanging out with you”) is followed by the best second couplet ever (“But I’m walking around alone, 1, 2,3,4”). Yet another masterpiece by the invisble band.
New Favorite Enemy – The Groucho Marxists – The sound of New Brunswick personified: art punk for teens.
Seven Sisters – Hesta Prynn – Two for two from the newbie. It seems to be about the production, or even the drums, but it is really about the vocalist.
Dear God, I Hate Myself – Xiu Xiu – Art-folk as self-immolation
It May Be Late – Harper Blynn – A coda and a call back and a pop move and with the Bangles old producer at the helm maybe it is.
My Name Is Lion – The Morning Pages – These guys are part of the Brooklynn scene? Hey, maybe I was wrong, maybe there really is something go on. Based on a blues piano lick and with strings before the midway part, it sounds old before its time.
Velvet – The Big Pink – Are these guys the next big thing, I missed the memo? Limey Brooklyn. Or JAMC when they’re being mellow.
Doomsday Device – Drop The Lime – First song they’ve ever done that felt like a step backwards. The bass isn’t hard enough and after “Set Me Free” it’s all a little whatever.
Madder Red – Yeasayer – They say “Enya with bounce” on their website. Actually, electronic folk but hey nice try.
