Owl City released a new single, and I was stoked to hear it. I hadn't really paid much attention to him at all for quite a while, but I remember loving "Rainbow Veins" and decided to check out "Good Time", which features the one and only Carly Rae Jepsen, singer of the hit tune "Call Me Maybe".
At first I expected it to suck, but then remembered how much I loved Owl City's originality and the quality of his voice.
It turns out that my first instinct was right. OC's been entirely mainstream-ified to the point where his singing isn't even half of what it used to be. Entirely stripped down and not even an essence of his old voice, it doesn't even sound like the same person. It's so bizarre. It's hard to believe that it's the same musician. Carly Rae Jepsen is just annoying, making the song worse. Her weak attempts to sing and go "woah woah oh oh oh oh" in the background were hardly even compensation for the lack of talent OC possessed on his own. The music is lame and generic, as though simply taken from a One Direction or Justin Bieber song (they all sound the same). This irritating radio-bound tune is nothing short of a disaster that feels temporary and sickening. It's held together by tape; it's for teenyboppers and teenagers with no sense of self to say "THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SONG!"
What a totally not good time.
