Scissor Sister released their fourth disc last week, ”Magic Hour,” and, all though its good in a retro 70’s sort of way it doesn’t measure up to their previous efforts. What was old made new again by this duo its no longer new. Its more of the same which isn’t bad its just isn’t as good as it was before when it was sort of new….
Scissor Sisters are an American band formed in 2001. "Spawned by the scuzzy, gay nightlife scene of New York," the band took their name from a sexual position between two women also known as tribadism. Its members comprise Jake Shears and Ana Matronic as vocalists, Babydaddy as multi-instrumentalist, Del Marquis as lead guitar/bassist, and Randy Real as drummer (who replaced Paddy Boom). Scissor Sisters have incorporated diverse and innovative styles in their music, but tend to sway towards pop rock, glam rock, nu-disco, and electroclash.
The second track sounds ‘Keep Your Shoes” a little like something you heard before from Gwen Stephanie or Toni Basil. Catchy but really? “Inevitable” starts like ballad but sound so much like the Bee Gees. Good yes, if The Bee Gees didn’t exist…. “Only The Horses” brings disco back in a fun and lighted way with a 2012 twist. Guetta is going to love remixing this… ‘Year of Living Dangerously” sounds a like The Cars “Who’s taking you home Tonite” Okay I guess. “Let’s Have a KiKi” tip of the hat to Electronic with a phone message sounding intro. The first single released from this disc. Hello “Black Eyed Peas” “My Humps”. Shady love is more the same. The rest of the disc feels like more of the same filler.
Not a disc that will ever stand out in your mind or anyone else’s. Great background music at a party for 20 somethings in lower Manhattan. I like the disc I don’t love it. Can’t hate it but can’t love it… I give it a D+ at best.
