I caught Nicki Minaj opening for Britney Spears last year and she was fucking awful. No muss, no fuss. A disaster of tapes, DJs, ridiculous staging, and crap raps.
And I like her -though I do think they are tring to make a star out of a member of the posse.
As you've probably heard by now, Nicki Minaj pulled out of her headline role at Hot 97's annual Summer Jam at MetLife because DJ Peter Rosenberg called her "Starships" hit "whack". Personally, I love the song, but why should that stop Minaj from playing for a captive audience. The decision came from Lil Wayne, owner of her label Young Money but I assume Minaj could override it if she wanted to.
When Wu Tang Clan headlined Hot 97 years ago and were pissed at the station, Ol' Dirty Bastard called them out from the stage, saying he didn't see why they were there at all since the radio station never played their music. They then proceeded to blow the Continental (now the Izod) down. I know this for sure, I was there.
That's how you respond to a slight (and Wu's was real, not Minaj's bullshit whingeing).
Minaj had an argument with Funkmaster Flex on the radio station Monday. This is what she said in part: "I just want to apologize to my fans for what happened last night, and like I said on Twitter, I’m going to make it up to them with a free concert,” Minaj said. “When you want our team to come to your show, treat us with respect. And that’s all we’re asking. We’re not asking for any special treatment. Just respect. And I’m very proud of my team, and the way they stood behind me—and I’m very happy to show my female fans in that audience, and even my gay fans in that audience, when I’m coming to your home, respect me. It’s no longer comedy. Wayne doesn’t take me as a joke.”
What's respect got to do with it?
When I read this years line up I considered it the weakest Summer Jam I had ever seen. Nicki Minaj is crap on stage and her last album was a mess which sold a whopping 500,00 units. Are you kidding me? Is it worth reminding you that this is the woman who pulled out of the Lady Gaga tour a coupla years ago?
Minaj and Weezy's actions are beyond disrespectful to their audience. And Rosenberg might be a putz, but if he thought "Starships" song was putz he has every right to say it.
Finally, I have zero doubt that claims Minaj pulled out of the show because she was afraid are not true… even though she should've been.
