The best action flick of the year is also the most human and most alien. Part three of the "Men In Black" series, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, as cops patrolling the extra terrestrial beat in the sweet spirit summer blockbuster series, never lets anything get away with the heart of the matter. The off kilter friendship between the two.
And that's even in a movie where Tommy Lee (agent J to you) disappears for most of it, so Josh Brolin can channel him as a young man.
A super duper Alien escapes from prison and goes back in time to 1969 where he kills a young Agent J thereby stopping Agent J from launching a shield that would stop a nasty buncha aliens from destroying the earth.
The only way for the world to be saved is for Agent K (tell em Willie boy is here) to return in time and save J and save the world. Plenty of time for 1969 sight gags, digs at racism, in jokes of K, sight gags, shoot em ups and…. Special Agent Andy Warhol!!! Plus one of the sweetest aliens, a creature who can see all possibilities in every moment simultaneously. He is just adorable!
And Pitbull to take us at the credits.
I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was quite an experiment -just a stunning visual feast. And FINALLY, it adds light on many aspects of the Agents friendship but I won't tell you how. In the end it is better than most action movies because at its heart its about friendship and serving the greater good.
Much better than the Avengers, this is as good natured a shoot em up as you'll ever see.
Music, plenty of hits from 1960s. When Will first reaches 1969 "2000 Light Years From Home" is playing. "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" figures prominently at a party Andy Warhol holds at the Factory. Lots of country and western whenever K is driving around whether it is 1969 or 2012. And Pitbull!!!
