"The Five Year Engagement" Reviewed (More Or less)

A Judd Abetow production, with a "from the producers of Bridesmaids" come on, this is the gross d=fest you might expect. Instead it is a slight, gentle, romcom. Indeed, it is one of those movies big stars would make in five days back in the 1940s. A sweet domesticity.

Jason Seigel and Emily Blunt meet AWESOME "Sweet thing" is playing in the background) in San Francisco, get engaged, and move to Michigan when Emily gets a post-doctorate,. Jason, a Sous Chef, is stuck making sandwiches at a Deli while Emily starts a flirtation with her boss. After much trial and error they marry.

The story isn't really substantial, the title gives away the ending, but Jason has hang dog sweetness down to an art and Emily has finally leapfrogged over her Devil wears Prada's assistant persona.

Some of the set pieces, one with Jason chasing a man through  the snow is very funny. And Emily being shot by an arrow is really, really funny. her five year old niece is responsible.

I didn't much like "The Muppets" but it had a sweetness to it and so does "The Five Year Engagement". You are never too cynical for light hearted entertainment.

Musically? Van Morrison covered and originals, from his glorious late 1960s mid 1970s era.
