I don't know about you, but I was neither the most nor least popular boy in High School. I got by on my wit, and it was really fun, but no… not the most popular boy by a long shot.division. My High School, Brummana, was a really terrific co-ed boarding school in the mountains of Lebanon and because it was a kind spirited place, the students were nice peoples and the cool girls weren't the mean girls.
And I still got nowhere.
Anyway, there was this very, very popular girl named Dorothy Sawaya, she was 17 when I was 13, and I was insane about her. Poor Dorothy, every time she turned around, there I was, this tiny bouncing ball of a boy.
Dorothy was so kind to me. She was unbelievably patient and endearing. And when she graduated at the end of 1969, she searched me out to say goodbye and I cried like a baby.
I can guess her feelings for me were a mix of irritation and pleasure. We are insecure animals, and being worshipped makes us happy and unsure at the same time. It gets in the way of who we really are. but it is addictive and I am sure Dorothy would loved to have been able to see what she looked like through my eyes.
When you're a rock star, you are Dorothy Sawaya and the rest of the world is me.
