Will Spotify take over ITunes for money generated by the major labels by 2015? That's former Napster, part owner of everything else Sean Parker's claim outta Austin.
It is a claim filled out with caveats. Since the majors own part of Spotify, saying the labels will make more money isn't the same as saying the artists will. And Parker isn't claiming that Spotify will be bigger than ITunes which it won't be.
Also, Parker is claiming that people who stream music might buy it as well. Risible? Maybe, but I know at least two people who worry Spotify will close down and they will be out all that music.
Me? I think that might have made sense 20 years ago, but today? If Spotify were to close down (and I don't see that happening in my time), I'd just buy the stuff I wanted when I wanted on ITunes.
Still, it is interesting that Parker would offer the opinion.
I have been very impressed with Spotify's apps and Facebook social networking. It is hugely better than ITunes disastrous "Ping" concept.
But, for the casual music lover, I can't see Spotify taking over from ITunes. And for the younger music lover, I can't see it taking over from YouTube. It seems that when the pre-teens get into their thirties, even $10 a month for unlimited music will sound pricey.
As of right now, Parker's claim sounds like wishful thinking. Now 5 years…
