Emily Browning was godawful in "Sucker Punch", so much so that I almost passed on "Sleeping Beauty" when I realized it was the same actress. She is much better here as Lucy, a belle de jour, college kid making tons of money as an underwear wearing waitress for private parties populated by exceedingly old men.
She graduates to becoming the "Sleeping Beauty'" of the title. Consensually sedated by the Madame, she allows men to do whatever they like with her except penetration or leave marks on her body, while she sleeps.
It can be taken as a feminist allegory though Sara aka Lucy, is up to her neck in complicity. Or it might well be that what interests first time Director, Australian Julia Leigh is a juxtaposition of youth and beauty and various forms of decay and ache. This is compounded when her only friend begins to fade from alcoholism.
It looks really stunning and while enjoy it is not the right word, I watched it with a detached coolness that mirrored the primary actress.
The music is all background except for a scene where the part time waitress clean a coffee shop while hard rock plays in the background.
