If you were living in the UK in the 60's and 70's, Jimmy Saville was a very well known entity. With his angular face, bowl haircut, shock of blonde hair (later wigs!0 and handful of catch phrases, we all said howz-about-that-then with him.
Saville came out of the English dancehall and claimed to have set up the first disco back in 1948. From there, he cut his teeth as a DJ at Radio Luxembourg (the "pirate" radio station that introduced the UK to "race" music and later rock and roll), finally moving to the BBC's Radio One.
I became aware of the deeply eccentric and wonderfully strange DJ from his work every couple of weeks introducing the legendary Top 20 Singles show, "Top Of The Pops".
In 1969, Sir Jimmy made a new show, "Jim'll Fox It" in which he made the dreams of youngsters come true. For instance, one girl got to be the third drummer with Adam And The Ants for a studio appearance.
For his charitable work, Saville was made an order of the British Embassy and eventually knighted.
"As it 'appens…" he will be missed
