Two weeks into the new season, SNL is on track for one of its worstt ever.. Every one from Kristin Wiig to Alec Baldwin is past their prime with only Seth Meyers left to carry the show for ten minutes a week, Tonight is filled with gross, cruel and humorless sketches funning on Melissa McCarthy. Apparently the ace writers think it is hilarious an overwight woman might have sexual feelings. Uncomfortable and cringe worthy, it almost gives Political Correctness a good name. it makes you wonder if Lorne is so sick of the grind he wants to get cancelled.
At this point it would be a mercy killing though perhaps the music would save the season?
This week on Saturday Night Live we have Lady Antebellum. A modern country band from Nashville, TN lead by singers Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott. The band has been around since 2006 and have won numerous awards from some rather prestigious institutions.
Grammy's and CMT Awards are signs that the industry loves them, but the fans are pretty nuts too. The more I research the more I realize that 'fanatic' is a word that absolutely describes your country music fan.
I am familiar with "I Run To You" and the opening lyric reminds me of Gordon Lightfoot for some reason. Hillary sounds like a country singer, generic.
What I need to figure out more than the what of this band is the 'why'. What's up Saturday Night Lives sleeve this season? Radiohead last week and Lady Antebellum this week? Reaching out for greater audiences I suppose. But regardless of who it is- here we are Iman and I with the daunting task of reviewing a late night performance.
Last week, was the first time we actually agreed- Radiohead sucked. This week we are back to opposite sides of the ring. Iman can appreciate the twanging, I on the other hand find tolerance a bit more challenging.
"We Own The Night", sounds like every other country song I have ever head with just enough twang to make it official and apparently theres not much time for dance classes cuz those were some of the most awkward moves I've seen ever.
Iman loves this stuff, considering it first rate country rock. Hillary may have put on a 'ton of weight' but that hasnt harmed her vocals at all. Iman loves it. I loathe it.
