Robert Whitaker, Took Beatles' "Yesterday And Today" Album Cover, Dies

It was, of course, a statement aimed straight at Capitol Records, who, in an effort to make more money off the Beatles, chopped up their British releases on EMI into little pieces. The Beatles, album musicians just about from the very begriming, were furious at the mess being made of their recorded work, Just compare UK and US versions of Help, where the US gutted it and put incidental music from the movie on one entire side.

Robert Whitaker took the bitterly sardonic picture dot the cover of The Beatles Yesterday And Today, full of doll parts and chopped up raw meats. Capitol covered it up in the States. It was known as "The Butcher" cover.

The album itself, released in June 1966, has the "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out" singles plus tracks off Help!, Rubber Soul and Revolver two months before Revolver was officially released.

Robert Whitaker died of cancer last week after a long battle with cancer. He was 71 years old.
