Just don’t listen to “Defying Graviity” : Mary Magpie counts her heartbeats for Junior High Shares

Problem:

How do different genres of music affect your heart rate?

Hypothesis:
If I listen to hardcore music, my heart rate will go up because it is
louder, faster, and is not mellow like country music.

Results:
Showtunes- 1 min of Wicked- Defying Gravity-84 beats per min

Control- 1 min of silence- 90 beats per min
Classical- 1 min of Beethoven-Fur Elise-96 beats per min
Country-1 min of Taylor Swift-Teardrops on my Guitar-102 beats per min
Hip Hop- 1 min of Black Eyed Peas-Boom Boom Pow- 108 beats per min
Pop-1 min of All Time Low- Hello, Brooklyn-110 beats per min
Hardcore-1 min of The Devil Wears Prada-Reptar, King of the Ozone- 122
beats per min
bstract:
I  chose this project not only to test if a heart rate can be changed
by something as simple as a song fragment, but because of my passion
for music. My emotion and mood changes when listening to different
songs, but a physical change seemed possible. I solved the problem
“how do different genres of music affect your heart rate?” and tested
the hypothesis “if I listen to hardcore music, my heart rate will go
up because it is louder, faster, and is not mellow like country
music.” By testing these with sound-canceling headphones in a quiet
room, I came to the result that my hypothesis was indeed correct.

Procedure:
Find a room that is quiet where you can be alone.
Sit down.
Wear a pair of sound-canceling headphones. This way, the only thing
you can hear is the music.
Listen to 1-minute fragments of a song from each genre, including the
1 min of silence (control).
After the 1 minute, turn the music off and check your pulse.
Record.
Repeat for each genre.
Conclusion:
When solving the problem “How do different genres of music affect your
heart rate?” with the hypothesis “If I listen to hardcore music, my
heart rate will go up because it is louder, faster, and is not mellow
like country music.”, I came to an interesting conclusion. My
hypothesis was in fact correct, but country music did not cause me to
have a very low heart rate. As a matter of fact, the showtunes
brought my pulse down the most. Hardcore music brought my pulse up to
the highest rate. If I were to do this project again, I would choose
to play more than a 1 minute fragment of a song.
