Three years after For Science's Tomorrow's Just Another Day, the great Joe Steinhardt is back with the first single off Generic Gift, Modern Hut's debut album. And it is pretty good though he has better awaiting release.
Marissa Paternosta produced it, and Chris Pierce enginered, names that need no introduction to Don Giovanni Records fans (No? a screaming female and Groucho Marxist, respectfully) and, lucky me, I have followed these songs from demos and heard them live on a couple of occasions and the production is great: These are acoustic, melodic singer-songwriter moves (the punk tag is a sleight of hand) but the fuzzed out bliss of "Wrong" is a tonic for the endless self-flagellation. Marissa has sped it up and built the song around the distracted vocals.
She joins Joe on "Life" -a partner song, and it has become a nursery rhyme of desperation, an echo-y acoustic song but what the fuck is that in the background? it sounds like a bassoon!.
So how good is it? Very good -and I hope Modern hut drop the mp3 soon. But, like I said, wait till you hear some of the other songs off Generic Gift, "Heart", "St. Louis" "America"… it won't be long!
