Madonna returned to the studio July 4th for the first time since the completely dreadful Hard Candy from three years ago which followed the completely awful American Life, five years before that, with only the pretty good Confessions On The Dancefloor two years after that. Got it. Ah, fuck:
American life 2003 Grade: C+
Confessions On The Dancefloor 2005 Grade: B+
Hard Candy 2008 Grade: C+
Hard Candy was a particularly big disappointment because Madonna was always the zeitgeist in the past, but with her last album she not only wasn't zeitgeist, the zeitgeist she was following, Timberlake and Timberland, were about three years out of time themselves.
When last heard from Madonna was dicking 22 year old Spanish guys and dicking around with some loathsome looking fashions. Oh, and making a film, and, er… oh yeah, that crappy song she wrote with the kid, and we don't mean the black orphan who wasn't an orphan.
BUT
I would be more likely to write Lady Gaga off then Madonna, so the news she is back in the studio is all good. Or at least it will be if she as found her modern William Orbit.
