Opening for Beady Eye, Thursday night at Webster Hall were local boys the Dig. A 90s inspired standard issue rock band who had nobody heading for the rest room.
With a visage in style since the late 70s, skinny, long haired moody boys, these good looking charmers built walls of sonic guitar sound around sturdy rock songs and psychedelic jams. David Baldwin – Guitars, Vocals and Emile Mosseri – Bass trade lead vocals on songs, sometimes trading verses in songs, and when they hit the sweet spot right, on the dynamic "Two Sisters In Love" off their EP Good Luck And Games for instance, they are roaring spitfires
Perfect as a Beady Eye opener, the sense of a coupla decades back is palatable and so what, right? Still, The Dig need to work on their stage presence (maybe Webster was too big a room) and within a half hour they begin to bore. Suggestion? add a cover in the mix, especially if you're the opening band, give the audience a chance to hear how you sound when you're used to the song: it is a calling card.
Or play smaller rooms… which they do, the Dig play locally all the time and are well worth checking out in a less cavernous hall. As far as the band name? Yeah, alright, I'll say it: you'll dig em
