The First Songs Of Our Lives

I have three sisters and a brother and I am the youngest by five years, so I didn't get around to buying my own records till I was 10 years old, the album was a goodie, "More Of The Monkees" and it was 1966.

Last week I did a cut and paste job off NME with rock stars telling of the first songs they had bought and I thought it would be interesting to ask my friends, colleagues, peers, what their first songs were.

Which gave me the opportunity to get in touch with my former Creem editor (and a rock star in his own right with Let's Talk About Girls), current Detroit Metro Time Editor Bill Holdship. Bill wrote: "Elvis Presley's "One Broken Heart for Sale" and J. Frank Wilson's "Last Kiss". My first records, as you can see, were 45s. I'm trying to remember what my first album was, other than Broadway musicals I inherited from my mom. I think it may have been the American "A Hard Days Night" a gift from one of my aunt's boyfriends. But I need to think about that one a little more. By the time I was in junior high, though, it was all about the albums. And I had all of the Beatles and Monkees LPs to date by then. Beatles broke up when I was in ninth grade."

And then more of my friends responded:

Alix Wartell – the sir mix a lot- baby got back single
