At a certain point in your life, technology catches up with desire and you find yourself looking for another way to do business.
From Bang to WB to Razor And Tie, Crenshaw has released vinyl on labels, and now he is gonna do it himself and if you become a member you get access and if you don't, you don't.
Act One, Scene One finds Crenshaw giving away a live version of "Maryanne" on his website, marshallcrenshaw.com. It dates from 1987 and was recorded at dating from 1987, 5 years after the songs release. A goodie as well.
The website is a great outpost for all things Crenshaw. For one thing, Crenshaw is representing Detroit in Chicago's Symphony Presents, leading Bettye LaVette, guitarists Wayne Kramer (MC5) and Mick Collins (Dirtbombs), vocalist and guitarist Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs), drummer Karriem Riggins, bassist Robert Hurst, and keyboardist and vocalist Amp Fiddler, in what should be a unique collaboration, on June 17th.
However, the entire enterprise appears to be in the transitional stage. At his City Winery 3 night stand, Crenshaw was offering the entire concert for sale on his website. There was a flyer to that effect. I lost the flyer and couldn't buy em on the website. Indeed, there is no merchandising whatsoever (not even the nifty cover of his first single tee-shirt!)
On the plus side? My 1982 interview with Crenshaw for Creem is there!
