Its my very first weekend back in NYC.. what to do?? Head to Roseland Ballroom and see Rockstar DJ Steve Aoki… YES please!
I have seen the owner and founder of Dim Mak records once before, at NYC's Electric Zoo last labor day. He killed it; multiple bottle of hundred dollar champagne sprayed onto the eagerly awaiting crowd like a teenage pornstar, an 11 foot stage leap from his DJ alter into the sea of hands and bodies; he was in complete and utter control of everyone in that dance tent. He is the epitome of a Rock Star DJ, a somewhat new classification of the disc jockey. He paved the way with tracks such as "Warp 1977", "Warp 1.9", "Warp 7.7" collabing with The Bloody Beetroots, "Misfits" with Travis Barker and his remixes to Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of happiness" and Drakes "Forever."
The term "DJ" is evolving, its not just two turntables and a mic. There are keyboards, MPDs, Mixers, sound effects, drum machines…. DJs are personas. They are celebrities, as they dam well should be. They control the party, the mood, if you get laid that night, EVERYTHING.
A book once stated that a DJ dates back as early to the times of prehistoric man. Now, of course, the cavemen didn't have Technics – but they had a more simple form of a DJ. After a day's work of men hunting for food and women gathering, the village would all come together in unison and have a feast around a fire. In this feast, there would be one man, a shaman, leading the songs and dances throughout the night and ensuring a state of content within every man, woman, and child in the village for that night. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? He was a prehistoric rockstar.
Wanna a little rockstar in ya? Come to Roseland Ballroom, (239 W 52nd Street btw Broadway and 8th) this Saturday night for just that.
