ABC Network cut the Adam Lambert man kiss from its West Coast feed and when Lambert calls it discrimination he has more than a point. The world goes wink, wink, nudge nudge at female same sex lip locks so why all this other over a male male kiss?
Lambert is something of a brave guy, it is one thing to say you’re gay, it is one thing for Elton John to hold hands with his husband, it is something else entirely for Lambert to be an openly homosexual, young, sexually attractive man. And people who should know better seem to be responding with an “not that there’s anything wrong with it but I don’t wanna see it”. Why I wonder?
Actually, Adam is (if you’ll excuse the pun) getting it from both sides. This pulled from the gay culture blog Ontheflix: “Towelroad.com reports that the editor of OUT Magazine, Aaron Hicklin bashed American Idols Adam Lambert and his people or handlers for being too cautious about letting Adam appear on the cover and pages of the alternative magazine at one of its parties because they didn want Adam top appear to be too gay. They report that Aaron Hicklin said that Adam’s people would only let him appear on the cover if it was a group shot,which included someone straight. ‘Out’ was urged not to make Adam too gay in the shot. They were also informed that Adam probably wouldnt be able to attend an Out 100 event because they didn’t want to jeopardize his record sales.”
This has the stench of a set up. Adam’s “people” might well have requested a group shot but I bet the rent the reasoning attributed was “Out” Magazine’s assumption and not managements statement.
But folks aint ever satisfied. Lambert is a big time breakthrough gay star. He is gay in a way other gay stars aren’t. He is a gay in a way that bisexual men or men who are unsure of their sexuality might find disturbing, tempting, an omerta sexuality there on Disney’s own television network. In 2000 Rupert Everett was still playing the gay best friend, even for an out like Everett, the clinging castrata holds the gay man in his place.
Lambert is nobodies best friend. He is the essence of fuckdom. And nobody is too pleased. Too out for mainstream, not out enough for for the Musto’s of the world, the only people who GET IT, who understands that Lambert’s sexual orientation is about as important as, say, prime Mick Jagger’s sexuality was, is kids from the current young generation. Lambert’s sexiness transcends gender. He is an iconaclast not because he is gay or straight but because he is gay and straight about it. Because of that he makes it clear his abnormality is not his sexual preferences but his intense sexuality. Out editor Aaron Hickler totally misses the point. Hickler is stuck being the worlds best friend -look here I am, he keeps on saying as though at this point being here was anything but self-evident.
Lambert is to being homosexual what President Obama is to being African-American. Sure Lambert is gay but it is besides the point on so many levels. Obama is all of America’s president not solely Black America’s President, Lambert is all of America’s carnal star not just homosexual America’s carnal star. He makes a mockery of fagginess. It is all so who cares? Just slithering, sweaty sex. A change is gonna come, indeed.
