New Music Week of February 28th, 2011: Nothing Really Lasts Forever

Four Letter Word – Beady Eye – “Nothing ever lasts forever”, Liam declaims. But the four letter word is the adrenaline rush not of sex but of emotional reliabilty. Wow almost grown up.

Rope – Foo Fighters – A friend of mine was telling me how this was recorded in his gare (we reported that months) on analogue, so you get the warmth missing on digital. Yeah, but it is FF by the numbersso who cares. Foo Fighters are to Nirvana what the Archies are to the Beatles.

Uberlin – REM – I guess “It Happened Today” was a fluke. This is the same old dreary crap, they’ve been shoving in our face for decades.

A Lot Like You – John Popper and the Duskray Trabadours – Blues Travelly quasi-folk shuffle. If the same was a bit better, Popper might be onto something with that hint of harp and sweetness. But it isn’t so…

Blessed – Lucinda Williams – This song is so bad, so sacrosant, soppy and stupid, Bob Dylan must be wondering if nobody remembers “Chimes Of Freedom”. Atrocious bulge and boring melody. The outro is OK.

Get Out The Way – Bobby Brown – The crack finally catches up with the former New edition star. By the numbers hip hop production.

21st Century Girl – Willow – Yeah, she can’t do it twice. Indeed, it sounds like Ke$ha for preteens.

The Afterlife – Paul Simon – Return to form, a shuffling back beat almost blues, almost African, with a fascinating lyric which seems to be sincere, though “you’ve got fill out a form first” is an hysterical comment on what happens when you get to heaven. TRACK OF THE WEEK

I Guess You Can Say Things Are Getting Pretty Serious – Forever The Sickest Kids – They are a bit cookie cutter young cute boy rock band.

Made You Move – Lykki Li – Overrated in the extreme. Another dog.

She’s So Up – The Knux – I’ve been predicting big things for this rap/rock band and this is another song waiting to hit back.
