Nature abhors a vacuum and with One Direction taking an indefinite hiatus after the release of their fifth album (or March, whichever comes first), you just know some boy band is gonna fill the vacuum. Remember when NSYNC took over from Backstreet Boys, or, indeed, when One Direction opened for Jonas Brothers at Radio City? Well, at least Freddie And The Dreamers taking over from Gerry And The Pacemakers?  Well, like that… here are the contenders.

5 Seconds Of Summer – I liked em at first but they are walking a very narrow side of the street, a sorta boy band Blink 182 from Australia? I don’t see em graduating from opening at to headlining Metlife any time soon.

Big Time Rush – Their TV show lasted two seasons, they had the money and management but lacked charm. Forget it.

Take That – English boy band from the 90s reunited, way too old.

The Wanted – If you think it is gonna be easy to take over from 1D take a look at these guy leather jacketed wannabes. Remember that “Happy Days” where the Fonz tries to teach Richie Cunningham how to be badass? They are the Richie Cunninghams. Look like the Ramones, sound like EDM pop.

The Vamps – “Somebody To You” broke em, but they are still at the selling out 3000 seaters level. Formed in 2012 and signed to Mercury, they look it , act it and sound it, and given the right push now for the next year, given the right songs, this Brit Band hit me as serious contenders for the next big thing.

McBusted – Two Brit Boy Bands who never broke the US, McFly and Busted, came together. Not a chance in hell, way too old.

SuperJunior – K-Pop superstars but I can;t see serious crossover int he cars despite them being a natural successor to NSYNC. But if Big Bang (or more to the point G Dragon) didn’t break pop here, these guys sure won’t.
