This Could Be A Golden Age For Music And We Wouldn’t Know It

The problem with music now is that it is such an unwieldy mess we can’t get to the bottom of it, it lacks a center, it just slops on every side for miles on end, it feels like an infinite stream of sound where like the universe it is infinite, since professional and amateur are the same thing anything and everything is music.

The result is as follows.

1- The necessity for absolute stickiness. Musicians have around 30 seconds to make an impression and after that, they are finished. It isn’t that this kills experimental music, but influences song structures. It forces everyone to place the hooks upfront.

2 – There is so much music, just because you’re great doesn’t mean you’re heard. Maybe nobody will ever hear it even though it is out there and easy.

So, it is possible, since it is so hard to be heard, that great artists are giving up. Like Maria Taylor told me a coupla years, you’ve got to make a living, at some point in your life you have to give up, right? So this could be a great period of music where the music isn’t even being written!

What does it mean when you don’t hear great music because it was never written? It is like me, childless, all the wonderful kids I never had and all the wonderful songs I never heard because they weren’t written or because I couldn’t find them and that is the great sorrow of this maybe great moment in pop music. We can’t hear it.
