Does this consist of a new Kurt Cobain song? My guess is the answer is a resounding not as such. It sounds more like Kurt doodling on his guitar for no real reason, trying out words, maybe it is an embryonic song but if he had indeed aborted it, nobody would claim anything like a partial birth abortion.
Which shows how thoroughly cannibalised Cobain’s recorded works have been -there is nothing left to eat off.
With all sympathies to Frances Cobain, I am not sure I would be so down with a documentary trying to tell the Kurt story once and for all, the story feels a little self evident. I am not sure what doesn’t sit right with me, I am not sure I understand the story well enough: did, as goes the partyline, Kurt feel that mass success was a sell out to his own gift, his own punk ethos. It seems that was part of it and if it was, then surely the last thing on earth you should be doing is ignoring his wishes by making a huge fucking documentary of his life. If he truly hated this public life, how does it support his vision of life to include him inĀ on this?
On the other hand, if anybody has a right to ignore his wishes it is his daughter, who didn’t know, who, through his own selfishness, missed having a father. That’s pretty drastic stuff and surely Francis has every right to claim: “hey, you don’t want to be a famous rock star? Fuck you, somersault in your grave over this, chump”. Francis, and only Francis, has the right to insist upon making her Dad’s future any way she damn well pleases.
Meanwhile, in my books, the 1990s belonged to Cobain and Biggie. Certainly, the only thing that matters about Nirvana is Kurt. The other two are playing Noel and Mitch to his Jimi. Here is the new song
