My friend Kevin Mazzarelli, you know him right? Sound guy at Mercury Lounge for years on end? Currently working on a very cool licensing software with a great buddy of rock nyc partner John Pasquale and right this second, Kevin is on the road with Gang Of Four and Public Access TV, he is mixing for the latter at SXSW.
Anyway, we’re talking music a coupla days ago and Kevin mentions seeing an Irish band at Mercury Lounge. A lot of industry people there and the band killed it. So I checked em out, Girls Band, the all boy group are called and they have an EP available from 2012, France 98 and it ain’t bad at all. A sort of beat group ,obstreperous, running full tilt, sound, like the early Kinks meets the early Fall. In other words, post-punk.
So who is Girl band? Dara Kiely (vocals, guitar), Alan Duggan (guitar), Daniel Fox (bass), Adam Faulkner (drums) is Girl band, named after a pain in the neck girl in a bar and while their best friends might have recommended against it, it Girls could call themselves Girls, why not, right?
The EP is kinda exciting in this temperate rock and roll moment: the band seem always on the verge of total collapse, they sound ;ike you just after you’re second Xanax, third line of coke and a double expresso in a bottle of red bull: somewhere between dizzy and dead right. “Handswaps” is a waking nightmare of a song!
Remember folks, always trust your soundman when it comes to new sounds.
