WEEK ELEVEN
Golden Slumbers – Being a founding member of either Soft Machine or Gong, flag wavers of prog rock freakdom both, Daevid Allen was a founding member of both and now he has died from cancer at the age of 77. As his son Orlando Moon wrote: “And so dada Ali, bert camembert, the dingo Virgin, divided alien and his other 12 selves prepare to pass up the oily way and back to the planet of love. And I rejoice and give thanks.”
Live: In an act of massive stupidity, Meghan Trainor played Irving Plaza, so half of her young audience couldn’t see her and D’Angelo played Best Buy on a Wednesday, leaving the stage at 1230am, by which time his audience were either in bed asleep or asleep on their feet.
Recorded: The moment you hear Rebel Heart, you know the week belongs to Madonna. However, both the Empire SOundtrack and the Rezillos are excellent and Evans The Death are already contenders for best new band of the year.
Tickets: Monty Python will be appearing together to introduce “Holy Grail” and that is a biggie. We reported the Stones would be touring this summer (of course, we also reported they would be touring the summer of 2013) and now the confirmations are getting louder.
Sports: Sure, Hockey is Herman’s Hermits to Footballs the Stones and Baseballs the Beatles, but still the Rangers are at the top of the Eastern Conference, especially pleasurable since the Islanders are brought back down to earth.
