Cradle of Filth: Rocks The Best Buy Theater March 3 -By Wyatt Marshall

British extreme metal legends Cradle of Filth embarked on their Creatures from the Black Abyss Tour in support of their new album Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa last night in Houston, TX, and are headed our way, bringing something wicked to the Best Buy Theatre on March 3rd. Cradle of Filth are infamous for their controversial and inflammatory imagery and rhetoric and have been turning heads and arousing the wrath of parents and authority figures since they first appeared on the scene in the early 1990s. You can do your own research, but as a warning, much of their imagery (in particular their infamous t-shirt artwork, “Vestal Masturbation” and “Gilded ****”: the former has the peculiar distinction of being ordered to be seized by police in Glasgow and campaigned against by the Catholic league of America and the governor of Wisconsin; the latter of being rejected for printing by a t-shirt factory when workers literally refused to make the shirt) is NSFW.

Controversy aside, Cradle of Filth has produced fascinating and genre bending/pushing music for nearly two decades. Their new album is a ripper, laden in gothic tonalities and sensibilities and instilled with the trademark Cradle sound, a Danny Elfman-like penchant for dark operatic movements backed by brutal blast beats, organ, and shredding guitars. Dani’s signature sirenesque screech is as disturbing as ever and I can’t wait to see them again in concert at the Best Buy Theatre.

I will have an interview with guitarist Paul Allender next week to discuss Cradle, Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa, touring, and Paul’s art project, Vomitorium.

Here’s their classic video for “Her Ghost in the Fog”, one of my personal Cradle of Filth favorites.
