Last Monday, in very red dark ambiance, the Pierces took the small stage to sang their alt-country-moody songs around 10:30 pm. The two sisters, Allison and Catherine Pierce, charmed the packed room with their sexy duet harmonies over their pop country arrangements, which blend the genres with ease. If there is some country in their songs, it could be a sort of good old-fashioned one, a sort of country à la Dolly Parton’s country, and their tandem vocal and the sweet harmonies could make you think about other female duo/trio like the Chapin sisters, but may be in a more upbeat way.
Their eclectic songs go from rock ballads with soaring vocals and breezy arrangements (‘We are stars’), to foot-tapping-alternative-country uplifting tunes (‘Sticks and Stones’), to cabaret-feeling-pop songs (‘Secret’). Their tunes are catchy as hell, as you swear you have already heard some of them, but you may have indeed, as they have been used in some popular series such as ‘Gossip Girl’, or ‘Dexter’.
Based now in New York but raised in Alabama by hippie parents, the two sisters have actually been around for a while, have already released 3 albums and an EP, and are about to release a fourth album in March. They had a hit with the song ‘Boring’ from their third album, a funny and ironic song making fun of the socialites, which turned into a very sexy and successful YouTube video, but somewhat different from the rest of what they played on Monday night, not that they weren’t sexy that night!
Looking at the two sisters, I was thinking that they seem to have received everything from nature, the look and the vocal chords, the musical talent and an undeniable charm,….
And the future looks very good as Catherine (the blond one on the picture) is currently engaged to Albert Hammond Jr. from the Strokes.
