I know so little about her, but when I stumbled on one of her songs ‘Well OK Honey’, I was simply attracted by the freshness and the cuteness.
There is this bass line at the beginning that fuels the whole song, and then the warmness of her ultra-sweet young voice rapidly wraps you up, the full sound filling all the space around you.
The song has this dancing-folksy rhythm, which charmingly hesitates between many genres, a little of jazz, a little of 60’s pop, a little of folk, and then the bright soaring exhilarating chorus opens up as if a flower was blooming in your ear. The whole thing is cute, happy and sunny, but is she talking about some failed relationship between an older man and a young hippie? ’I’m a child/you have a child’!
Jenny O. was born in New York but she is now living in Los Angeles, where she has just released a self-produced EP, ‘Home’, last November via Manimal Vinyl Records, after performing with many other artists (Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy among others),… and I must have seen her in the LA Lady Choir once.
About the video for ‘Well OK Honey’, this is what she had to say:
‘I always wanted to make a dance video and while I was visiting friends in Humboldt County I had a camera and some willing help. It all came together pretty naturally. We shot the neighbor’s house. Those are my friends’ bikes, trucks, and hiking spots. Hats off to Jacqueline Suskin and Sarah Sky for their patience and sweet moves.’
Jenny will also have a February residency at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles.
