I’ve held off doing my weekly round up of new releases because there hasn’t been too much out there and so I’ve kinda been dealing em all in my daily fave tracks post. But my feeling about not doing posts I’ve set out to do is similar to my feeling about, and this drives young Helen bonkers, about keeping to our posting quota, miss one and one day you’ll find a reason to miss em all.
So hey ho here’s “Ohio” -a Black Key’s obscurity given away with presales of Brothers and finally available to the money spewing public. The Black Keys are my token white blues band. I vastly prefer em to, say, anything Jack White puts his hand to and last years “Next Girl” was such a great single it still jingles in my head so… TRACK OF THE WEEK! Not so fast, buster… I swear Jessica Lea Mayfield’s “Our Hearts Are Wrong” beats it out. She sounds like Kurt Cobain with that real cool detached pain shit going in on her voice, like she is stuck in a Camus treatise and can’t battle her way out… there is a connection to the black keys by the way, Dan Auerbach produced.
Country boy Randy Montana, despite having a dumbass name, has a real achy voice on “1,000 Faces” , Mayfield’s song was marred a touch by an over-repetition of the hook (just like “Shell Game”), Randy fucks up the middle but otherwise it’s a pretty pop stomper.
What else, “Get Up And Die” by Eatmewhileimhot! Is fair to middling hardcore, “Lover” by Fela Kuti reminds me why he is so missed. And Eliza Doolittle’s “Rollerblades” makes me wanna trip her.
Next week things should start cooking.
