I dubbed Lorde the most overrated of 2014, so why would I check her out?
All the usual reason, the album has been hovering in the “B-” to “B” range and to be honest, not unlike Mogwai who I just wrote about, I find Lorde’s problem that she is a little on the boring side as opposed to being a major annoyance like, say, Adele, who I would have gone to see anyway.
But also while I believe everybody else over rates her, I think I underestimate her. I like “Team” and “Tennis Court” before Lorde took over and only grew sick of her as the rest of the world raved. And then, I loved her cover of the Replacements “Swinging Party” and I came back a little more even heeled.
But also, I run a music website and I feel like taking a closer look, she might have more than one hit in her, I should catch her early.
Then I went to the negative again: Roseland and sold out? Ugh. But then I read this great quote in the Guardian “I’ve been in some situations where people have treated me like a fascinating toy. You know, it’s just like an interesting kind of fun thing to have a play with. It’s very weird for me. I feel like a tiny baby. But it’s all relative: when you’re my age in particular, every year feels like a massive change. The difference between 15 and 17 is colossal for everyone.”
So I went off to Stubhub and tickets were switching hands for $200 and that was out of the question but I kept thinking of it and prices went down to $84. That was cheap enough for me to risk it.
So I took a look at the setlist. Pure Heroine plus a new song plus a Kanye West cover. Maybe an hour. Okay, I can live with it. Plus, it will give me one last chance to curse out Roseland. So I bought a ticket for Wednesday March 12th.
