Here comes Act Three of Spin. From the Guccione years, to the vibe years to BuzzMedia -now known as Spinmedia, Inc, nothing seems to able to save “Spin” or its sister companies. Spinmedia has gone through three CEOs in a year according to New York Post’s Keith J. Kelly. Apparently, killing off the print version of Spin has done nothing to help Spin or the “network of pop culture websites.
Spinmedia have hired investment bankers Piper Jaffray to find a way out but there only appears to be one in three:
1. Get more money
2. Sell
3. Wrap it up.
But who wants to buy it and who wants to invest in it?
Spinmedia owns and manages over 40 websites including, obviously, Spin, Brooklynvegan, Pop Matters, Stereogum, I’ll stick em all up at the end. But it begs the answer to a question, how can they not be making money? I mean, surely if you’re looking for men in their twenties they can put em together like that, right?
Apparently not, again according to New York Post “It’s a brand graveyard. It’s sad”.
The lesson here appears to be that pop culture writing is dead in 2014 and I have no doubt that if rock nyc had anyuthing approaching real expenses we would have folded years ago.
