I just discovered a band called Sledding With Tigers and I’m absolutely in love. They describe themselves as “bluegrass-punk” on their Facebook, and have about 6 people in their band. They’ve got violins, banjos, mandolins, accordions- you name it, really. They’re a softer version of Ramshackle Glory, almost. And wow are they great.
“Quit Yr Job” is the first tune off a 8-track release called “Being Nice Is Still Cool”. I love how it starts with powerful group vocals, cos it caused me to be instantly captivated. It’s an angsty tune and flows right into “High Waisted Shorts”, a beautifully composed piece that I can’t stop listening to. The girl’s vocals that come in to harmonize are a wonderful addition and make the song even more intriguing. The song is described as, “This is a love song of sorts. I guess it’s more of a song about attraction, than love. The person in question is really just an amalgamation of several different people I’ve met over the years, and unsuccessfully attempted to woo. Woo is a weird word.”
The last track is called “I Think I Missed That Day In School Where They Teach You How To Be A Person”. It seems to express the real struggle of a kid trying to grow up. “A year out of college, a year into debt, and I still haven’t moved out of my parents house yet,” starts it out and sets the scene. The line “Well I don’t know where I’m gonna be in a few short years or a couple of weeks, but I swear to god, I’ll be on my way- it might not happen tomorrow, but it will some day,” is so uplifting and really provides a message of hope. It’s a brilliant way to end an album, because it’s all about self-reflection and being excited and ambitious towards the future.
Check Sledding With Tigers out. They’re perfect.
