Big Star Third To Be performed Live With Symphony -by Mike Nessing

Long time Alex Chilton disciple and dB’s guitarist  Chris Stamey has collaborated with other southern power pop greats to present live for the first time the groundbreaking and influential Big Star Album, “Third”(aka Sister Lovers). The shows take place on two nights only, on December 9th and 10th,  at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC.
Bolstered by a full symphony orchestra, As well as longtime Stamey cohorts Peter Holsapple and Mitch Easter, the show will also feature Mike Mills of REM fame, as well as the promise of other special guests. REM has also graciously donated the use of their own vintage mellotron in order to recreate faithfully some of the records most abstract and dissonant symphonic structures.
More than five years in the talking and planning stages, the concert was actually envisioned prior to Big Star leader Chilton’s death, and Chris Stamey has a most excellent blog online where he divulges that he was on his way to recruit Chilton to participate in the concert down at the SXSW festival when news came of Alex’s untimely demise. The Stamey blog can be accessed at  http://bigstarthird.com/
With the proceeds to benefit music charities  in Durham, NC and New Orleans, LA, the concerts will also be filmed as a major component of “Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story,” a documentary film by Danielle McCarthy and Drew DeNicola slated for 2011 release.

Tickets are $17 in advance and $20 day of show and are available at www.catscradle.com or by calling the Cat’s Cradle box office at (919)967-9053
