Monday Morning Rock: Janis Joplin Wannabees -by Iman Lababedi

1. Wouldn’t It Be Nice – The Beach Boys – The joys of co-habitation in the California sun.

2. Govermentalists (feat Nas) – Joss Stone – Bluesy Janis Joplin wannabee needs to sing better and have better material.

3. Zebra – Beach House – Belle And Sebastian fall asleep at the sea shore.

4. Age Of Poems – Take It Easy Hospital – Is it good? Good, not great. But when you started your career risking your life to play rock in Tehran, good is good enough.

5. Roll With Da Winners – Clipse – Pusha T’s old crew being very, very ordinary.

6. Cable TV – Fol Chen – These guys are like a college project gone horribly wrong.

7. Love Will Tear Up Apart Again – Joy Division – The elasticized emotional car wreck is showing its age a little. Or maybe it is a memory you return to time after time after time: it loses its ability to move you.

8. Miss Me (feat Lil Wayne) – Drake – Sure Weezy can flow like a motherfucker, Dweezy can’t.

9. Design – Star Fucking Hipsters – Noisy star fucking hipsters if you ask me.

10. Sometimes – The Carpenters – Like being stuck in an elevator with muzak on a loop and a girl softly sobbing next to you. Not a bad thing.

11. Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In – The Fifth Dimension – Makes a sell out sound like a sell out.

12. Magnificent – Rick Ross and John Legend – Legend is the most boring soul man who has ever lived. He even looks boring. And Rick Ross has a strong texture to his voice, the deepest rapper since Biggie. But he never raps anything worth listening to.

13. The Enemy (Feat Fat Joe) – Big L – There is no way of predicting how big Big L woulda been. But every time I hear him I thing he woulda been the best since Biggie.

14. Always A Friend – Alejandro Escavado – The revival got stalled when we figured out his songs suck.

15. Tiny – Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – I almost liked em, I swear. Till I read Dan Aquilante’s rave.

16. Long Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines – Panic At The Disco – The title says it all and if it doesn’t it should.

17. Trainwreck – Vanity Theft – Still pissed I missed em at the Studio during CMJ. Good bluesy pop dance.

19. Little Drops Of Rain – Judy Garland – Judy could improve any song. Except this one.

20. Little Marie – Chuck Berry – “Memphis” Part II. Is Chuck double tracking his voice? Not a good idea. Though the guitar solo is death defying.
