OK Go, the band which made extremely successful Youtube videos (remember the treadmill one?), had a parade-type project in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
I did not have the opportunity to check out their project unfortunately, but it seemed kind of fun: Using GPS devices along an 8-mile route, they traced their name ‘OK Go’ in digital graffiti, while playing with battery-powered amps and encouraging people to join in throughout the city.
They had teamed up with Range Rover, which of course wanted to promote their new model, and they used the Range Rover Pulse of the city iPhone app, which lets you visualize your trajectory using GPS. If you are like me and are having a hard time understanding the whole thing, go there: http://www.helloevoque.com/okgo/
This is what bassist Tim Nordwind told Paste magazine: ‘We spent a lot of time in New Orleans, where music exists primarily as a live event, we thought it’d be great to do something like that in our home city. We wanted to do more of an art project with it.’
They played about 50 songs during their 8 mile trip, with a lot of classic Beatles songs, songs that everybody would know.
The whole thing was filmed, fans were encouraged to download the app, follow their GPS parade and then create their own GPS artwork. The band will choose their favorite ones and use them for their future video to be release in January 2011.
I’m not sure what this thing was about, it is beyond a music project obviously, but is it a creative art project or an advertisement for Range Rover and iPhone?
