Marcellus Hall performed a set of sturdy, high melody quotient, pro-love songs, at the Bowery Electric. Backed by a truly excellent bassist playing melody lines that reverberated with power, Marcellus played folk songs with a wide eyed range on emotional distractions.
Culled from his long birthing first album with band the Hostages, songs like “Under The India Sun”, “Falling Over” and “Life Is Still Sweet” have that lived in, that assurance that can only occur through repetition.
Marcellus has a strong voice, and a sell assured presence and while his songs are well fitted in genre, they would work nearly anyway because I’ve seldom seen a folkie so melodically obsessed. I mean, he brings in his bassists to play rhythm guitar???
the album is due February and should be worth waiting for.
