Taylor Swift’s 1M plus debut week of Speak Now is the most since 50 Cents debut in 2005. In rock speak? The most in the digital age.
She deserves it.
I have e problems with the album, and I have documented them, and I don’t think it will be the success Fearless was because I think many of the songs are too formfitted and won’t crossover and out of her target demo the way, I dunno, “Our Song” did. The audience for “Dear John” and “Innocent” is huge and yet limited. It is perfect and creepy at the same time: it is like “Us” Magazine set to sound.
But she deserves her success any way.
Because “Speak Now” and “Mine” are two of the best songs written this century. Yes. They may well be her two best songs, they are both 1st Tier, up there with “Love Story” and “Forever And Always” and “Tears On My guitar” and, and if you disagree with me on this one I’ll admit it is a personal fave as opposed to a necessarily huge achievement, “Today Was A Fairytale”.
What I admired about “fairytale”? Her ease in the song, she made it seem so simply, so easy… a song like “Speak Now” is first and foremost a writer’s song. It is obviously the work of the artist, “Fairytale” is when you are almost zen like with your abilities.
Anyway, no I don’t much care for the album. But I love Taylor. Hey, maybe the next one I’ll will love it all!!
