Where’s Jack?
A good question. After wowing Paul Williams through his writing, and wowing me at “Don’t Tell Mama’ Jack Phillips seemed to disappear into the wilds of California with only a review of Elton John to share with his. But I believe Jack and his family are back in town and to make things better, his band are back in town with a return engagement at “Don’t Tell Mama’.
With musical director Conal Fowkes on piano, Debbie Kennedy on bass, Bobby Short’s long term drummer Klaus Suonsaari providing the beat, Jack Phillips band are ready to make some waves in Cabaret and I sincerely hope they do. Not only is Cafe Nights In New York a terrific set of songs (one of the best in 2012) who survives as modern standards, it sounds good repeated and lives to breathe in the cabaret format, but Jack is a very very nice a guy, and one of those people you just know is gonna pull off a coup d’etat in the world of American cabaret.
Unfortunately for me, I am going to see Aretha Franklin on Friday, January 17th when Jack and band are back at “Don’t Tell Mama” (though I might see if I can wangle an invite to the soundcheck). I wonder if he has tweaked his set any, I thought the covers were a little new York overkill myself but Jack knows best.
