Wednesday night Shakira played a sold out Arena concert in LA. After the show, she was being driven thru the parking lot when she had the limo stopped, jumped on the hood with two back up singers and sang “Loco” and then jumped on the back of a truck and taught female fans some dance moves.
Cool stuff and made her plenty more fans (as if she needed any) and also indicative of the huge fun quotient in Latin American music.
I am a huge Meringue fan (I don’t write about it often but I am…) and have seen superstars like Grupo Mania, Elvis Crespo, Frankie Negron -as well as major salsa icons like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. What hey have in common was uncommonly exciting live performances.
In the 90s I used to go to MSG’s end of summer Salsa parties and the music would be mind blowing from 7pm to 2am -usually (one year it was completely fucked but that’s another story…) non-stop.
Crespo was my fave, and if you ever catch him live? No doubt if this guy was an equivalent rocker in the US he would be a superstar.
