Shinobi Ninja At Kefis, Wilmington, Tuesday, October 26th, 2010: Hyped Up -by Sara Kaloudis, Pics by Tye Idleman

There was another mass attack last night in Wilmington, NC. No fatalities were reported but there were some injuries due to excessive dance, head bangs, and Shinobi. That’s right hunnies. The NINJAS WERE BACK! Rockin the house down last night, Shinobi Ninja opened for The Movement, a phenomenal reggae band who is actually opening up for 311 tonight at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach.

Shinobi Ninja is a group hailing from the great Brooklyn, New York. This group of six brings a hip-hop influence to a full instrumented band, accompanied by DJ AXIS. I had attended one show before this one and had the pleasure of being introduced to this loving group of people. There are two lead singers (Edara & Dave), THE man on turntables (Axis), a drummer (Dave), guitarist (Mike), and bassist (Johnny).

The ninjas came out of the van with nothing but smiles. Maniac Mike and Terminator Dave, immediately came at me with open arms. With only meeting them once, the hugs these guys gave me were filled with more love and excitement than the hugs I get from half my family. I was given the pleasure of meeting the bassist, Johhny, who was absent in the last show, and was pure comical bliss the whole night. We had a great time hangin back waiting for the show to start. Edara a.k.a Baby G came out the van with her ever so famous swagger. This afro goddess gives anyone she meets a hug, a hand, and a smile. She was so generous the whole night and makes you feel like you’re one of her girls from back home. Dave, DA, reserves his freshness until he gets on stage. He is fairly contained before a show but once you get him on stage and open that jar he splashes his energy all into the crowd.

After sound check DJ Axis Powers got the the crowd a little wet with some great tracks including ‘pursuit of happiness’, the Steve Aoki remix. He did a great mix between Usher songs too. I can’t even begin to try to explain this man’s intuition when it comes to mixing.

The group exploded on stage with ‘Brooklyn to Babylon’ I was hoping the audience wouldn’t get hurt with the shrapnel of DA’s sharp voice and Edara’s hard hitting moves. The two keep each other balanced and appeal to different aspects of what the audience would expect from a group like this. DA is slightly more fierce, he has a hidden anger that motivates his rapping style; while Edara is just this milky smooth queen of stage presence. In between songs she would talk to the audience and get the ladies hyped up. For the song, ‘Nah-Nah’, Edara asked ladies to get on stage, including myself, to sing back up vocals. While most of the girls were up there enjoying the music more than they were participating in back up vocals, it was great to see such energy from a crowd. Johnny, the bassist, was hidden behind the girls only to burst out for a great bass riff right before the song ended. He brings a great aspect to the band and is just a silly guy 🙂 They followed with ‘Show-Mourning’. The song was a great catch-your-breath song since ‘Nah-Nah’ was so hype. After a few more songs the group ended with ‘This is How We Do it’ and ‘Let the Beat Drop’ Both were songs made intentionally for GETTIN HYPE. Baby G even got to throw in a little dance solo when DJ Axis sampled G6. I love the shout out to A Tribe Called Quest that Baby G makes every time too. and EVERY time I’m right under neath her screamin’ the lyrics. While most of your attention remains with DA and Edara, Mike RIPPED out some guitar solos which was a nice reminder that while they have a DJ and rappers, you’re still given the pleasure of hearing real instruments. Especially when Dave kicked it up in a drum solo in the middle of the set.

This group is unreal. And their energy is unreal. If you aren’t jumping as high as you can or banging your head as hard as it can bang at one of their shows, you are probably a paraplegic. Again I can’t even continue with how hospitable this group is. Woody Fuller brought them down for the south to hear, with the help of Xandali and I couldn’t be more grateful. ALL my love goes to that group. I can’t wait to witness another attack by SHINOBI NINJA.
