Last time I heard something from Gruff Rhys, it was for the Sparklehorse project, ‘Dark Night Of The Soul’.
Directly from the beach, he has just released a new solo track, ‘Shark Ridden Waters’, which will also be the title of his upcoming solo album.
I have always appreciated the Super Furry Animals for their adventurous pop, but this last track works more for its cinematic value than everything else. It sounds like the beginning of a beach movie and makes you visually feel the waves leaking your feet. There are a lot of real sounds and Rhys’ voice seems to come from an abandoned boombox on the sun-bathed sand of Amity Island.
