Breathe Carolina Listen To A Lot Of Hip Hop -by Mary Magpie

I had the fantastic opportunity to interview both the guys from Breathe Carolina- David Schmitt and Kyle Even.  Stoked as ever, we got started.
I asked what their favourite song was off of “Hello Fascination”.
David: “I have a couple.  I like ‘Hello Fascination’ a lot because it was kind of the first song that we introduced like, the guitar kind of full band aspect.  That’ll always hold a place because that was the first time that we actually kind of tried something kind of crazy.  ‘Rescue”s also cool because it talks about our lives in touring and everything we do today.”
I asked what they’re looking forward to the most on this tour.
Kyle: “Just hanging out with the bands.  We know all the bands.”
David: “We’ve known them all long before this tour.”
Then I asked if they could see any concert with any lineup, who it’d be.
Kyle:  “We’re about to go over to Australia.  All our friends and Mayday, My Chemical Romance is actually playing, I think AFI is too.  A bunch of huge bands and they’re our friends so I think that that’s like a show that I would want to see.  People that I’ve played a show with, but also people I really admire and that I’ve never seen.”
Next, I asked who their biggest influences were.
David: “Lately, we’ve been listening to a lot of hiphop stuff.  Drake, as weird as that may sound.”
Kyle: “It’s weird to say, but I think that Luis because he dives into all that electronic stuff.  He’s just found new ways of doing what DJs are.  He’s our DJ.”
I then asked if they had ever seen themselves where they are today.
David: “I always thought about it but I don’t think I ever thought this.”
Kyle: “It was one of those things that were like ‘oh that’d be sick’ but no.”
Next, I asked what their favourite show that they’d ever played was.
Kyle: “I’m gonna say Denver Warped.  That was just, like, dream come true.  Being home.”
Then I asked what their favourite venue was.
David: “I didn’t realize how much I dug this one venue until we played there.  The Alter Bar in Pittsburgh.  It’s just like a really really cool cool place.  Like when you play, there’s a wall with big projection screen.  So when you play, you can watch yourself and then look over at the crowd.  So you can really see what the whole show looks like.”
I asked what their current favourite song was.
David: “This song called ‘Father Said’.  It’s Sonny Moore, he has a DJ project.  That’s like my favourite song right now.”
I then asked, if they’ve ever been into heavy, heavy rave music(i.e. Deadmau5, etc).
Both: “Yeah, oh yeah.”
Kyle: “We actually, uh, weed in some DJ’s tracks in our beats just kind of introduce kids to something they maybe haven’t listened to.  Maybe they’ll find it along the way and they’ll get stuck on it and maybe dive into that DJ a little bit.  Maybe one day we could play a show with them.  It just makes us unique I guess.  Direction we want to go in, playing with DJs would be awesome.  We’d love to try it.  I feel like we can but we haven’t really shown the people that are into it that we can.”
I then asked the iPod question, fascinated with what answer I’d get.
Kyle: “Perry Como Christmas.  Love that.  Go listen to it.  Best Christmas music you’ll ever listen to.”
David: “I don’t really..I just listen to whatever.  I’m not really embarrassed by anything I listen to.  I listen to a lot of stuff but I can’t really think of anything I’m embarrassed about on my iPod.  I’m into like, really super super heavy music.  Whitechapel.  Suicide Silence.  I’ve always dug heavy music so.”
It ended with Kyle saying “I love Perry Como.Thats my jam, thats my Christmas jam”
These guys are a 2 man party.
