I used to think, you know, it is not on for record labels to dictate how musicians make their records. Now, I am not so sure.
For one thing, bands have less money but many, many more options. If you are signing with a major label don’t give me that art for arts sake shit: it’s about the bread, or at least mass love. Which is fine with me.
So MGMT’s Andrew Van-Wyngarden reeling from the flop sophomore album Congratulations, told Scotland’s Daily Record : “We’ve been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it’s quite different this time. They’ll be more involved and not give us as much freedom.”
Translation: we don’t like not selling albums and if we don’t get a hit we are completely fucked.
