Thirty five bucks later, I am happy to own Bootleg 1963 outtakes from the Please Please Me sessions and BBC Radio tracks yet to be officially released, rush released by Apple to stop them from losing their copyright protection (which happens to any songs not released after 50 years).
Released on December 17th in the UK, and also briefly in Australia and New Zealand, i found it on Itunes Christmas Eve, and I keep an eye on Itunes releases but I guess I missed this one.
So is it any good? It is for me. I don’t collect Beatle boots (Dylan boots yes, Bruce sometimes) and the only one that became a constant in my collection is Off White, so I haven’t heard the 15 Please Please Me outtakes and while what I gain from it is a little doubtful, I did find the way they played with the back up vocals fascinating, an imperfect Lennon nearly overpowering Macca’s lead is a great deal of fun. Lennon singing the song he gave to Billy J. Kramer “Bad To Me” is a special treat and heads straight for Beatles For Sale several years later.
Otherwise, it is all BBC outtakes, especially the ubiquitous “Pop Goes The Beatles”. What is missing is the internal intelligence of the Live AtThe BBC sets. Which it is true that it is all of a year, and a great year, in the Beatles history, still something feels off in the way the songs follow each other.
