Ani di Franco’s “Untouchable Face”: What I Am Listening To Right This Minute by Iman Lababedi

There was a time when Ani Franco, weird, self-releasing, presumed lesbian folk singer was on target to rule the world and the very height of her powers she released “Untouchable Face”. A stunning beautiful song of unrequited thatd eserves quoting and despite my feeling a bit more like that “cuz I’ve been in love and I was loved right back” then “fuck you and your untouchable face” right this second.

Ani is playing pool in a bar with the object of her affection and the spinning of the ball leads her on a solitary reverie: “I could make you happy if you weren’t already” she ponders, before wandering off alone: “I don’t want anybody to follow me except maybe you…”

She loves him (it’s a him, you can tell) but her every sense tells her, he is with the right girl. And so Ani is left with thwarted desire, with really nothing much: “Fuck you and you’re untouchable face, fuck you for existing in the first place.

At the time, Ani was doing doodly, lazy folk blues numbers by the numbers. Like Michelle Shocked without the Schock. Very prolific, making good money, but this song came from nowhere and she never came close to repeating it.
